Construction of Library at Himalaya Secondary School

Donate to the project

Himalaya Secondary School (HSS) is located in Khandbari, Nepal. HSS supports 1,700 students from preschool through high school graduation. Many of the students travel long distances to attend, as it is one of the best public schools in the region.

Himalaya Secondary School plans to build a new library within the next year to benefit students and staff. The current HSS library contains over 4,000 books, but they are inaccessible to the students. The library is very small, with minimal light and crowded bookshelves. In addition, there is no space to sit and study. Due to this, the majority of students don’t use the library and therefore lack the opportunity to gain knowledge and learn new perspectives outside the classroom. The new library will provide not only accessibility to books, but also natural light, comfortable seating, and air conditioning.

Students will also have a space to study, learn, and take a break in between classes. The Nepali government denied funding to build a new library therefore Himalaya Secondary School is hoping to build the library through fundraising. The estimated cost is $15,000. With your support, we hope to reach this goal!

Louisa Lamarre, a previous member of the Ten Friends board is leading this project. This summer, she traveled solo to Nepal and spent a week in Khandbari, home to the Himalaya Education Center. She spent the week with Sunita Gurung (the head of the HEC and PTA president at Himalaya Secondary School) and had the opportunity to become close with the principal and vice principal at HSS. She spent a day hiking with them and celebrated her birthday at the school! They made her aware of the state of the library and she agreed to fundraise to support the construction of a new library.

This library is especially important to her because in 2020, Louisa fundraised to travel to Khandbari to dedicate the current library at HSS. Since then, more books have been donated but unfortunately, the library was relocated to its current insufficient location. In her words, she states, “I believe it is important to continue to support projects and provide access to books so students can develop empathy, perspective, and knowledge.” Any donation is greatly appreciated!
